Dead Rising is a dynamic third-person action game infused with elements of survival horror. The story follows Frank West, a photojournalist searching for a big scoop in the small town of Willamette, Colorado. The military has inexplicably quarantined the town, and Frank soon discovers the reason: a zombie outbreak. Trapped in a shopping mall with survivors, Frank has 72 hours to uncover the truth behind the outbreak before his helicopter extraction arrives.

Players explore an open world filled with thousands of zombies, using an impressive arsenal of improvised weapons such as brooms, lawnmowers, swords, and firearms. Weapons degrade quickly, forcing Frank to adapt and use anything at his disposal. Completing objectives and saving survivors earns Prestige Points, which allow players to level up Frank, increasing his speed, health, inventory space, and combat abilities.
