Bread & Fred is a platformer game that follows the journey of two penguins attempting to reach the summit of a mountain. The two characters are tethered together by a rope, necessitating constant cooperation. Designed with local co-op in mind, the game also features a single-player mode.

In Bread & Fred, the connecting rope partially restricts the mobility of the penguins but adds various exploration methods. Players can swing one penguin to propel it into the air, dragging the other along. The rope is also useful for securing a partner, pulling them up onto platforms to prevent falls. The penguins can cling to walls to save themselves from long drops, though their grip only lasts a few seconds due to their weight.The game presents numerous challenges, including steep climbs and unstable or slippery platforms. A height meter constantly tracks the players' progress. While primarily designed for two-player cooperation, the single-player mode replaces one penguin with Jeff, a rock tied to the rope. Jeff can be swung to aid in the climb, offering a similar dynamic to the cooperative gameplay.
