DiRT 5 is the latest installment in the renowned racing series primarily focused on rally racing. Depending on how you count, this is the fifth, eighth (including DiRT Rally and Showdown), or even the thirteenth game in the series, considering the Colin McRae Rally titles from which DiRT originated. The game builds upon concepts introduced in DiRT 2 and offers a similar atmosphere, with a greater emphasis on narrative elements than typically seen in racing games.

In Career mode, players follow the rivalry between two top drivers, AJ and Bruno Durand, who compete in the DiRT Off-Road Series. These characters are voiced by well-known gaming actors, Troy Baker and Nolan North, respectively. Players take on the role of AJ's protégé, who gradually rises to become a new star in the championship.

DiRT 5 features an arcade-style driving model that is simplified, with cars suffering only cosmetic damage. The races are fast-paced and visually impressive, with dynamic and often extreme weather conditions adding to the excitement. The main game modes, such as LandRush, Stampede, and Ice Breaker, allow players to race licensed rally and off-road vehicles on scenic, fictional tracks in locations like the USA, Brazil, and Morocco. The game also includes a Gymkhana mode, where players perform tricks to score points, and a Playgrounds mode, which lets players create custom obstacle courses to share and compete on. As players progress, they earn experience points that unlock new decals and customization options for vehicles in the detailed livery editor.
