Divinity: Original Sin is a cRPG developed by the Belgian studio Larian, serving as a prequel to the Divine Divinity series. Set before the events of the 2002 title Divine Divinity, the game returns to classic RPG roots, featuring an isometric view and turn-based combat.

The game delves deeper into the mythology of the Divinity universe, allowing players to explore the origins of key characters like the beloved wizard Arhu, before his transformation into a cat, and the eccentric Zandalor. As a prequel, Original Sin also lays the groundwork for the third installment in the series, resolving many unanswered questions from previous games. Players take on the roles of two young Source Hunters, tasked not only with solving a mysterious murder in one of Rivellon's cities but also with mastering forbidden magic and combating its consequences. The protagonists soon discover they share a mysterious bond, making them uniquely suited for a greater destiny.

In single-player mode, players can control a party of up to four characters—the two main heroes and two mercenaries who join the party. Divinity: Original Sin also supports a two-player cooperative mode, where a unique conversation system between party members, particularly the two protagonists, enriches the gameplay. In single-player mode, this system offers engaging dialogues reminiscent of BioWare titles like Baldur's Gate. In cooperative play, it allows both players to influence the group's decisions equally, even if they disagree. The game randomly selects which character's opinion will prevail, adding a layer of unpredictability and collaboration to the cooperative experience.
